Fixed Fixed Beam with a Moment at any Point — Superposition Mar 2025

Use Jupyter and Sympy to quickly calculate a deflection formula
I decided to derive formulas for a fixed fixed beam given a moment at any point.

I also produce influence diagrams for the reactions ML, MR, and VR. These calculations were done by hand and then verified using Python, Sympy, Jupyter. The influence diagrams were built using Plotly, Python, and Jupyter. The moment diagram [*] on page 6 of the PDF was produced in Excel using my tcmd (turtle command) function.

[*] only the red-outlined polygon 🙂

Structurally, I was surpised by the results: Given a moment loading, M, placed near the right support (0.3L from the right end), the right end moment reaction, MR, was less than a tenth of M.

All around, enlightening.

I present the problem and the solution.
